Trigger finger is one of the most common hand conditions that patients have. The tendons that bend the fingers and thumbs all pass through a series of structures called pulleys. Pulleys line the hand and fingers and act as protective, anchoring sheathes that allow the tendon to slide, much like the way a rope slides over a pulley. Unfortunately, there isn't much space underneath these pulleys for tendons to slide, so when inflammation occurs, the sliding mechanism can become impaired.
